Close the steps of an open staircase yourself with custom sawn panels, by Susan

Closing a staircase yourself is a fun DIY project that is easy to do yourself. Especially if you choose to order the sawn panels online. Susan has chosen to use plywood poplar. Read more about her experience below.

I closed our open staircase to make the hall seem calmer and tidier and to create storage space under the stairs ( next project).

How I made this project

I read up on various DIY forums about closing the stairs. I then ordered custom-sawn poplar planks through this webshop for between the steps. I applied mounting kit at the top (where the plank makes contact with the step above) to reduce the chance of the stairs creaking. I then clamped the planks one by one between the steps. I screwed the planks to the steps with screws to the step below. At the top I used pine slats against the back of the shelf, I screwed these from bottom to top in the top step and placed them against the shelf with mounting kit. This ensures that the planks are firmly secured against impacts. It is useful to pre-drill the slats to prevent splitting. I am very happy with the end result. Next project: making a cupboard under the stairs!
